One is left asking: Like the movement of the troops on the dusty road, our lives are temporary, and after we pass, the only thing that remains is the dust we leave behind; ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
The descriptions of the war, the dying soldiers, the injury that befalls Frederic, the escape to Switzerland are gripping and flow through the story.
